Since Ollie has been admitted, he has gotten to move around a lot and has been in such a sweet mood. This chemo can technically be done out patient but we needed to do it for five days in a row and we were concerned about waiting for Monday to do it in case his disease starting gaining momentum.
He was feeling fine yesterday afternoon and asked Will to go to the playroom, but 10 minutes later he was curled up on the bed shivering with a fever and vomiting. He has been feeling so well and took a turn so suddenly that we were very concerned that he had a line infection. His chemo shouldn’t be making him sick yet, and sure enough we confirmed today that he had a central line infection.
The protocol is to start antibiotics right away whenever there is a fever with a central line, so he was on antibiotics while the cultures were sent to the lab. He seems to be feeling much better today, thankfully, and we are waiting for more information to come back from the lab.
Will you pray that these antibiotics will work, we get to move onto the next steps of chemo, and that he doesn’t have anymore fevers? If there is something resistant to antibiotics in his line and we can’t treat it, he will have to have surgery to get this line replaced and get a new one. That will delay his next steps in chemo significantly which we can’t afford to do. We will likely be delayed a day already, which would be okay but not ideal. We don’t want to hit him really hard with the next chemo if his body currently has an infection. We will hopefully know more tomorrow.
