Today is a happy day… Maddie is 7 and Oliver is looking great! His counts have all started going up and he hasn’t had fevers or vomited in the last few days. When his ANC is about 500 for three days in a row, engraftment will have officially taken place. His ANC was 100 on Wednesday, 200 yesterday, and 500 today. Red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are also going up. So if this trend continue, engraftment will take place on Sunday! Our team is so happy with how he looks and as long as things keep trending up, they expect us to go home next week. We have to get one of his central lines taken out before we leave so we will have to put him on the surgery schedule, but as long as they can schedule him and all his counts look good, next week we should be going home!
We are so grateful for this news, but with it comes an adjustment to what his life at home looks like. We have to come into clinic the day after discharge and we will continue coming in twice a week for the foreseeable future. The highest risk of infection is the first 100 days post transplant (we are on the 15th day) so we have to be very careful about not exposing him to germs. He will be sent home with many medications and will be on an immunosuppressed diet (no berries 🫣). We will have to re-learn how to manage three kids when one needs a one-on-one care taker until the end of August. We appreciate your support and continued prayers for our family! We have felt so encouraged by this community and know we can do this.
