All went well with the bone marrow transplant (also called hematopoietic stem cell transplant) today! Thank you so much for your prayers and concern.
For those wondering, our donor had two bone marrow aspirations yesterday in both hips. The transfusion that he got today was extracted from her bone marrow so it’s similar to blood but enriched with stem cells that make white cells, red cells, and platelets. They put it through his central line and it will circulate through the blood stream into his bone marrow spaces where those stem cells will engraft and start making new red cells, white cells, and platelets for him.
Over the next few days his counts will all keep falling, at which point we will start seeing some symptoms like mouth sores, fevers, or pain. Over the next couple weeks we hope to see the cells engraft and generate new cells which will make him feel better. We will keep you updated along the way!
